Cary Leaves His Mark: 31 Days of Cary Grant, Day 23

Cary Grant adds his handprints, footprints, and signature to a slab of wet concrete at the Schaefer Center at the New York World’s Fair in August, 1939.

Scanned from Cary Grant: A Biography by Marc Eliot (Harmony Books, 2004). Most of the images I’m scanning for this series are publicity photos, intended by the studios that created them to be reproduced and shared. However, since this one comes from a more exclusive publishing context, I have watermarked it with the copyright.

  1. I’ve been following your pictures and have really been enjoying them. This picture isn’t from 1951, though. It was taken in August, 1939, at the World’s Fair in New York. I’m not a big fan of the book it was taken from. The author even gets the date of his death wrong! However, I don’t blame you for including this pic. It’s a great one. 🙂

    • Thanks for the kind words and information! That biography bothers me too with its gossipy, unsubstantiated tone and the general dearth of discussion of Cary’s films and performances (nice pictures though…). CORBIS, however, dates the photo c.1950s.

Could you direct me to a source that attributes the image to the New York World’s Fair? I’d love to clear this up!
